A Failure To Parent

In 1 Samuel chapters 2-4, the sin of the Jewish priest Eli is recorded. What terrible sin did Eli commit? He failed to lead his family in a moral way. Eli's two sons were abusing their trusted position as priests in the local place of worship. Eli ignored his community when he was told about his sons' transgressions. He failed to discipline his sons. Eli's lack of corrective action ignored God's mercy to his family. Essentially, Eli told God that he was willing to displease God so that he could please his sons by allowing them to continue sinning. As earthly parents, we need to follow God's example and teach our children that sin has consequences. God corrects us out of love. All of us must learn to submit to heavenly authority and also earthly God-given authority.
