Submission to Government

August 4, 2024 | Romans

Romans 13:1-2 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

The Bible can be a difficult book to understand. But a larger problem is when the Bible is easy to understand but difficult to abide by. This section of Romans calls for submission to the governing authorities and fits into the category of “easy to understand but difficult to perform.” It is good, right and holy for us to submit to God's appointed authorities out of a heart of submission to God. If civic laws move outside of God's Law because people have moved away from God, then we are called to change the hearts of people by preaching The Gospel in love. Jesus taught us to repay persecution with blessing. This concept goes against all human nature and cultural influence yet we were created to walk in the ways that Jesus taught us.
